How to Find Yourself and Your Style is a book like no other on the open market. Penned by self-proclaimed creative creative and mother of two, Alaya Aifel’s 118 page title collides the worlds of fine art and self discovery to propose an alternative angle to the traditional self-help book market.
Spanning across thirteen chapters, How to Find Yourself and Your Style uses imagery of classical sculptures and art as the basis to challenge readers into thinking outside the box. For example, in the first chapter Aifel presents a series of sculptures and asks reader to consider what emotions each “face” evokes in them, does one feel more pleasing to look at than the other? What can be taken away from the sculptor’s use of smooth lines versus sharp? For any readers struggling to find a response, Aifel will often helpfully call out her own reaction to the question she has set. This is a nice touch, because it not only ups the engagement levels, but gives readers a glimpse of the author’s personality as well. Aifel also includes a detailed endnote section towards the end which spans into several pages of detailed references, giving credit to the artists who indirectly contributed to the bedrock of this book.
This is a really enjoyable book, with minimal wording and maximum use of imagery. The perfect read for audiences who struggle (or do not have the time) to heavily invest into a bulky self-help guide, How to Find Yourself and Your Style is very easy to flick through at whatever pace the reader chooses. The book cover is gorgeous and perfectly suits the subject matter, it would stand out for all the right reasons on anyone’s bookshelf.
When it comes self discovery, there are rafts of titles which make bold promises but rarely deliver. How to Find Yourself and Your Style has managed to succeed where others have failed, making it a well-deserved five star read and an author who is now firmly sat on my follow list. I cannot wait to see where she goes next.
